RIGA – The Education and Science Ministry is planning to include the Latvian Maritime Academy and Liepaja Maritime College in the ecosystem of Riga Technical University (RTU) with the aim to strengthen maritime education and make it more accessible at all levels of education.

As LETA was told at the ministry, the reorganization will provide broader opportunities to obtain maritime education in line with international standards, develop professional and academic career and promote excellence in this academic field.

The decision of merging the Latvian Maritime Academy and Liepaja Maritime College with RTU will be taken by the government, which is expected to set forth a timeframe for the reorganization and next steps in the transition from preparations to the action phase.

As reported, in June this year, the Saeima passed in the final reading a bill on higher education reform to overhaul the higher education governance system, provide a new typology of higher education institutions and change their internal management.
